National Rehabilitation Hospital

The National Rehabilitation Hospital is located on Rochestown Avenue in Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin.  A Masterplan for the overall site has been prepared by the project team to guide future development of these lands.

Permission was granted for Phase 1 redevelopment of the hospital by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council on 4 September 2008.

This approved development comprises the construction of a new hospital and associated facilities (c. 46,139 sq.m. GFA).  The project includes a principal hospital building with reception, treatment and ward blocks connected by internal corridors/link bridges at various levels, accommodating 235 bedrooms.  This new hospital building will range in height from 2 to 6 storeys.  The scheme has been prepared to respect and tie in with neighbouring development proposals, including future road upgrades along Pottery Road and Rochestown Avenue.

The proposed project will involve a complex move from existing hospital facilities to the proposed new hospital buildings, in order to ensure the National Rehabilitation Hospital can remain in full operation at all times.  Given the scale of the proposed project and the complexities of the move, resultant projected timeframes for substantial completion of the project required the applicant to apply for planning permission for a period of 8-years.  The contract for construction of this project was tendered in September 2008.
